Pedestrians and zebra crossings

Last checked:

You let pedestrians and drivers of a disability vehicle go first who cross on a zebra crossing (zebrapad) or clearly want to cross. You always let a blind person with a white cane (with one or more red rings) and anyone who moves with difficulty go first, also away from a zebra crossing. When you turn, you also let the pedestrians go first who are crossing the road you are turning into.

What you do in practice

  • Someone standing at the edge of the pavement by a zebra crossing and looking at the road? Stop and let them cross.
  • Look at the pavement beside the zebra crossing too: someone walking briskly may cross in a moment.
  • The car ahead of you stops at a zebra crossing? Do not overtake: someone is probably crossing.

The mistake many people make

Only stopping when someone is already on the zebra crossing. Someone who is clearly about to cross goes first too.
