Priority vehicles
A priority vehicle (voorrangsvoertuig) is a motor vehicle with blue lights and siren on. All road users must let it go first, even if the signs or lights give you priority. If an ambulance only has blue lights without a siren, or neither, it is not a priority vehicle.
Watch the animation questionAmbulance with blue lights from the leftWhat you do in practice
- Hear a siren or see blue lights? Check where the vehicle is coming from and make room in a safe way.
- Make room without causing danger: do not brake suddenly in the middle of a junction.
- Once the vehicle has passed, the normal rules apply again. Watch out: a second vehicle may follow.
The mistake many people make
Only listening for the sound. In the exam the animations have no sound: recognise the priority vehicle by its blue lights.
