Coming out of a driveway or a home zone
Whoever makes a special manoeuvre lets all other traffic go first. Special manoeuvres include driving out of a driveway onto the road, pulling away from the side, reversing, turning round and changing lanes. If you come out of a home zone (erf, sign G5) over a raised strip, that is a driveway too: you let everyone on the road go first.
The signs
- G5 · Start of a home zone (erf)15 km/h, pedestrians may use the full width, and you park only in marked bays.
What you do in practice
- Out of your garage or drive: first let the pedestrians on the pavement and the cyclists on the cycle path (fietspad) go, only then the cars on the carriageway.
- A ramp or a raised pavement between the street and the road? Then it is usually a driveway, not a junction.
- Traffic from the left goes first too: traffic from the right goes first does not apply here.
The mistake many people make
Applying traffic from the right goes first at a driveway. A driveway is not a junction: whoever comes out lets everyone go first.
