Animation questions in the Dutch theory exam (hazard perception)
TheorieWin is not the CBR and does not book exams. What cbr.nl says always applies.
Since 7 April 2025 the car theory exam has no separate hazard perception part. Instead, some of the 50 questions start with a short animation without sound. You say what will happen or what you do, usually as multiple choice or yes/no. Below are 9 examples in that style, with the right answer and the explanation.
Examples to practise
Street with parked cars, 50 km/hWhat is going to happen now?
Zebra crossing aheadWhat do you do?
Uncontrolled junction, cyclist from the rightWho may go first?
Tram from the left at a junction without signsWho may go first?
Roundabout: car on the roundabout coming from the leftWho goes first?
Ambulance with blue lights from the leftWho may go first?
Door opens in front of a cyclistMay you overtake the cyclist now?
Motorway (autosnelweg): red cross over your laneWhat must you do?
Deer crossingWhat do you do?
What are animation questions?
- An animation question starts with a short film of a real traffic situation, seen from the car. The film has no sound.
- Then you answer a question such as What is going to happen now?, What do you do? or Who may go first?.
- The questions mainly test seeing and predicting: do you spot the hazard in time and know what the other road user will do?
- They sit among the other questions of the exam. There is no separate part and no separate result any more.
How to watch an animation
- Look far ahead and to the sides: pavement, cycle path (fietspad), side streets and the gaps between parked cars.
- Watch for the clues: a ball, an indicator, brake lights, a car door, someone walking towards the kerb.
- Know the rules that decide who goes first: traffic from the right, the tram, a priority vehicle (voorrangsvoertuig), shark's teeth (haaientanden) and signs.
- Remember there is no sound: you can only recognise an ambulance by its blue lights.
About these animations
The animations on this page are made by TheorieWin, not by the CBR. We build them in 3D with Dutch streets, signs and road users and ask the questions the way the exam asks them. The explanations follow the RVV 1990, the Dutch traffic rules. In the app you practise with many more animations and with every other type of question. How the whole exam works is in the theory exam explained.
Frequently asked questions
Do the animations in the exam have sound?
No. The CBR animations are without sound. You have to see everything: you recognise an ambulance by its blue lights.
How many animation questions are in the exam?
The CBR does not give a fixed number. It only says that several questions can have a short animation, within the 50 questions.
Does the hazard perception part with photos still exist?
No. That part with brake, ease off or do nothing disappeared on 7 April 2025.
Are these the real CBR questions?
No. They are TheorieWin practice questions in the style of the exam. The CBR does not publish its exam questions.
