Priority when turning
When you turn, you let the traffic on the same road go first: the oncoming traffic going straight on and the cyclist or moped rider beside you or just behind you. If you turn left and the oncoming driver turns right at the same junction, the oncoming driver goes first. These rules do not apply to a tram.
What you do in practice
- Turning right: check your mirror and over your shoulder for cyclists on your right or behind you. They go first.
- Turning left: wait until the oncoming traffic going straight on has passed, even if you both have green.
- A cyclist just ahead of you and you turn right? Do not overtake: stay behind and turn once they have passed.
The mistake many people make
Thinking you have priority because your light is green. Green does not mean the traffic going straight on on the same road waits for you.
