Traffic lights, police and traffic controller
Instructions from the police or a traffic controller (verkeersregelaar) go above all traffic signs and rules: if they tell you to stop, you stop, even at green. Traffic lights go above the signs and shark's teeth that regulate priority. A flashing amber light means: dangerous spot, be careful. Then the signs, the shark's teeth or the normal priority rules apply.
What you do in practice
- Green light and also shark's teeth on your road? Follow the light: whoever has red waits.
- Flashing amber and shark's teeth in front of you? Give way to the traffic on the road you cross, from the left and from the right.
- You recognise a traffic controller by their clothing and their gestures: follow them, even if the light says something else.
The mistake many people make
Thinking you have priority at a flashing amber light. It is a warning: check which signs or shark's teeth there are, and without signs traffic from the right goes first.
