Priority signs
Priority signs tell you who goes first. The yellow diamond (B1) makes your road a priority road. The triangle pointing down (B6) and the stop sign (B7) mean you give way. At a narrowing, sign F5 means you let the oncoming traffic go first, and sign F6 means you go first.
The signs
- B1 · Priority roadSide roads give way to you. Lights and a traffic controller (verkeersregelaar) still overrule it.
- B2 · End of priority roadFrom here the normal rules return — usually priority to the right.
- B6 · Give way to traffic on the crossing roadNo need to stop if the road is clear, but you yield to every driver on it.
- B7 · Stop (stilstaan), then give wayA full stop at the line is compulsory, even on a completely empty road.
- F5 · Give way to oncoming trafficYou wait before the narrow section. Its counterpart F6 (blue square) means the oncoming driver waits.
- F6 · Priority over oncoming trafficYou may go first, but only once the gap is genuinely clear.
- B3 · Priority crossroadsYou have priority at the next junction. Unlike B1, it applies to that one junction only.
- B4 · Priority crossroads, side road on the leftAt the next junction a side road joins from the left; drivers coming out of it must give way to you.
- B5 · Priority crossroads, side road on the rightAt the next junction a side road joins from the right; drivers coming out of it must give way to you.
What you do in practice
- At B6 you may carry on if the road is clear. At B7 you always stop at the stop line first.
- B3, B4 and B5 only apply to the next junction; B1 applies until the end-of-priority-road sign.
- You have priority and the other driver carries on anyway? Brake: you may not cause danger.
The mistake many people make
Mixing up F5 and F6. At F5 the red arrow is yours and you must wait; at F6 your arrow is white and the oncoming traffic with the red arrow goes after you.
