Signs for parking and stopping
At a no-parking sign (E1, one red stripe) you may not park, but you may stop briefly to let people in or out or to load. At a no-stopping sign (E2, a red cross) not even that is allowed. A blue sign with a P (E4 and on) tells you where you may park, sometimes only for certain vehicles or with a parking disc.
The signs
- E1 · No parking (parkeerverbod)Brief stops (stilstaan) to load or let people in and out are still allowed.
- E2 · No stopping (verbod stil te staan)Stricter than E1: you may not even halt briefly.
- E4 · Parking areaA sub-plate may limit it to a category, a time, or permit holders.
- E6 · Disabled parking spaceOnly with the official disabled parking card; if a registration number is on the sub-plate, the space is for that one vehicle only.
- E7 · Loading and unloading onlyStop to move goods, then leave. Parking (parkeren) there is an offence.
- E10 · Start of parking-disc zoneSet a blue disc showing your arrival time, or you get a fine.
- E12 · Park and ridePark at the edge of the city and continue by public transport.
- E3 · No leaving bicycles or mopeds (bromfietsen)Applies only on the side of the road where the sign stands; it says nothing about parking (parkeren) cars.
- E5 · Taxi rankFor taxis only; you may not park (parkeren) here in any other car.
- E8a · Parking for motorhomes onlyYou may not park (parkeren) an ordinary car here, even if there is space.
- E8b · Parking with two wheels on the pavementOnly where this sign stands may you park (parkeren) with two wheels on the pavement; normally it is not allowed.
- E8c · Parking for charging electric vehicles onlyPark (parkeren) here only to charge an electric vehicle; a car that is not charging may not stand here.
- E9 · Parking for permit holders onlyWithout a permit for this place you may not park (parkeren) here; stopping (stilstaan) to let someone out is allowed.
- E11 · End of parking-disc zoneFrom here you no longer need a parking disc; other parking rules may still apply.
- E13 · Car park for carpoolersMeant for parking (parkeren) your car and travelling on together with others in one car.
- E8 · Parking for the vehicle category shown onlyOnly vehicles of the type shown on the sign may park (parkeren) here; you may not with any other vehicle.
What you do in practice
- If there is a sub-plate with times, the ban only applies at those times.
- A disabled parking place (E6) is only for people with a disabled parking card.
- In a parking disc zone (E10) you put the parking disc where it can be seen, until the end-of-zone sign (E11).
The mistake many people make
Mixing up parking (parkeren) and stopping (stilstaan). E1 forbids parking; E2 also forbids stopping briefly.
